once upon a time in a far away land fivwthousandtwohundredandeighty feet above sea level… there will be a place called SOLAR….SOLAR is older than the sun moon and stars and has no beginning nor ending… its s story of a place that exists everywhere is nothing new and is everything you want it to be.
September 27th is Green Jobs Day and to honor it and all the soon to be Green Jobs that will exist at SOLAR and all the green jobs that currently exist all over the planet earth we plan to host an all day extravaganza fun-house of sorts for us to make art, talk about why LOCAL first is as important as the sustainable model (and is actually the sustainable model) and why green means more than this new hip craze…. why we love out grandmothers and our children and why DIY is always better… this funhouse of greenity will most def have sweet treats and elixers and nectars in many many many flavors for your sampling pleasures and games for all of your so-called ages….
also…. yes we are still working toward an opening date… its interesting tho, in our journey to SOLAR we have some of the most compelling and most profoundly simple epiphanies about life, plants, money and peoples perceptions of all of the above. with all of the political banter and debate about who is and is not… the constant thing that remains is… clean food is good. clean food is good. yes I said it twice on purpose and thrice even…CLEAN FOOD IS GOOD.
having said that… you should all know that we have torn down some walls and any of you may come to visit our evolving home and join in our vision and add on as a helping hand and and and and….. we anticipate opening within the first couple weeks of january 2009 (this will give us three good years to partay….just kidding…for real tho)

I was meeting with a friend last week… and we were talking about perceptions and business and dollars and money and language and community and being (heart & mind)open and he said something to the effect of “ what does business look like for you?” And I said something to the effect of, it’s not really about business in the common sense of the word, it’s about a movement in community.
I (Faatma, lover of vegetables and people) invite YOU to join us.
We know you want SOLAR to open soon. We do too. This is your opportunity to become a part of a movement in food & culture for YOU(and everybody else). There are those that don’t believe that SOLAR can work because people don’t like vegetables. But we know YOU do.
We are short some dollars to begin the building process for SOLAR and have exhausted all the normal bureaucratic avenues for said dollars. So now we turn to those who have been calling, emailing, stopping by and blowing kisses in anticipation of SOLAR in the CITY.
Sponsorships/Donations/Gifts from you can make it happen and then we can show the universe (and be trailblazers in our city) how invested the people are in their own personal health and the longevity of the community.
It’s always been a part of SOLAR’s mission for the organization and the space to be community driven and for the people and now it can also be BY the people. As you know while we are in the “business” of food, we are also very much in the business of FUN. So in thinking about how to commemorate the people who offer Sponsorships/Donations/Gifts and we‘ve started visioning the inspiracy (because we inspire not conspire) like this:

*FLOWER ESSENCE* EVERY Sponsorships/Donations/Gifts will forever have their name on the wall of fame & get a limited edition (only 100 printed) SOLAR – innerG & Livity Tee Shirt.
*LEAF/STEM INFUSION* Sponsorships/Donations/Gifts over $100 get the above plus they get to name a plate… whatever they want (so long as its uplifting), whether it’s your name, a superhero, a quote (short)…etcetera (you get the drift)
*ESSENTIAL OILS* Sponsorships/Donations/Gifts over $300 get the above plus they get to name a space. It could be named after you or after someone/thing you admire. Spaces like The kids corner, the bar, the theatre, the gallery, the dining area, the lounge, the kitchen, the community wall, the newsstand, etc….

back in the days when I was a teenager, before I had status and before I had a pager…. ways out… for real tho back in the days at Karma in the olden days, we did this thing… it didn’t have a name or anything and it wasn’t really advertised, but we did it anyway because we love the people. we love ourselves and we love y’all and we love the city and we love the garden but most of all…. we love your guts.
now that we work toward gettin Solar open (I’ll give you an update on that in just a sec) we start thinkin about the people we love and thier guts…. what are y’all gon’ eat until we get open? and how do we stay connected to our resources in the interim.
and the OG LunchBox is Born.
The OG Lunch Box (OG for OrGanic & Lunchbox cus it comes in a box) is a way for us to eat organic produce at a significantly lower cost than the retail grocers will ever allow for us. We have long term goals and plans for the hood OG food co-op and in the interim we would love to invite you to participate in the OG Lunchbox. Basically SOLAR will receive organic produce from local farmers (as best we can) via Growers Organic and Delaney Farms every monday, sort out the boxes into two sizes which you can choose.
a small OG LunchBox can feed 1-2 people for the week
a large OG LunchBox can feed up to 5 people in a week
the box will include a mixture of inseason fruits and vegetables and varies weekly based on what is in season and available to us and you can come and pick it up on location at SOLAR on mondays.

we really sincerly love your guts and what this is more than anything else is a start on showing each other how little effort it will really take for us to make change (no obama jokes please) in our hood without selling off our first born children and our souls. It can be easy, we just have to do it together to make it work (I swear I’m not a politician).

SOLAR UPDATE.
I promise I really and truly planned to be opening right about now. And its ok that it hasn’t happened that way. we are learning alot about the process and the way our city builds things. We are trailblazin y’all and part of the reason why some of this is taking some time is because our city does not have a space like SOLAR yet. And while no one doubts that we are most neccesary they also have questions. fair enuf. I have become the expert at explaining our vision as well as explaining the practical application of such a space.
Our city is beginning to love SOLAR too. I know sometimes it feels like were taking forever, when really we are just making sure the energy is right, the dollars are right, the building is right, the foundation is rooted in our mission, and the folks who are helping to manifest this space are down for the greater good.
OH! and how could I forget to tell YOU!! The Website is LIVE!! http://www.solarlivity.com the content is being added daily… there may be some kinks to work out, but my girl Celia Herrera is super duper fly in her design. leave us comments there and check in for updates regular. I will be posting the MENU soon!!!
