LOVE to YOU

***just so you know I am a huge fan of brackets, parenthesis and elipses… (see!), it just makes it all more fun, whether or not its grammatically correct… :-)

so we were a participating food vendor at this years (which happens to be the 1st) VegFest & Health Expo.  mind you, I don’t think anyone really knew what was going to happen….. it was an adventure after all.

1 week prior I tried to pull out as a vendor, and I got a message from Mr. D who was like, “ oh hell naw, you *itches betta ask somebody what to make?what “your word is your bond” means and then come tell me what you gon do!”.  Well, he didn’t exactly use those words, but you get my meaning (and if you don’t you *itches betta ask somebody what it means!…j/k).  so I got it together and revised my meal plan, went shopping (which was the most fun bcs I spent half my time chatting food politics with the produce guys {which I love to do} ) and pulled out all the appliances just to realize how small my kitchen is at home.

I cried and complained to L (also known as Lavell my business partner who shall be referred to as L in this entry for anonymities sake) and he says, “ well come use my kitchen” and appalled, I replied, “ I can’t do that because, eeeew, it’s a bachelor pad!”, and he assured me, “I’ve had it cleaned especially for you!”.  Aaaaaaah… I exhaled(who knew it could be so perty when its clean [thank you Ayana!].)

For two days I was in production mode… mumbling about love up rising under my breath in hopes of creating some like-water-for-chocolate-like effect on the food.  It was all raw, because well, I knew all the other vendors would bring cooked food and that it would probably be a tofu extravaganza and also because its sooo good!  I made sesame pecan cookies w/ strawberries, banana-nut cakes w/ kiwi slices, falafel balls, pumpkin seed spread wrapped in marinated chard AND chocolate truffles.  I was sure I had made more than enuf food and at least enuf for 1500 people.  All the while writing to do lists for L (my equal and support staff), which he graciously obliged no matter how loud I may have barked at him. (THANK YOU)

The morning of got me some green water packed it up and headed out, pondering my intentions you know, do I do it out of obligation to the world, or because I love myself enuf to share?  Does it matter?  Is it the same thing?  I wasn’t sure if it would be an event where a few people trickle in with good conversation or if there would be a steady flow of Veggies to eat my food… it didn’t matter, I love vegan food in its many forms and was ready to learn something.

YO… on the real, I had not anticipated the organization!  You know, I have vended so many different types of events (albeit this was my first time vending food) and never in all my years have I encountered such warmth and genuine care for the vendors by the volunteers and the other vendors.  Veggies just love each others guts sooo much we just can’t help it I guess.

And on the strength… I think Mr.D reported more than 1600 people there.  Yeeehaaa! I was out of food by 1:30!  Now I did make the mistake of having multiple platters of food out at a time (lucky folks who got to try three and four things at once) but all in all it was a beautiful event.  I didn’t get to see any of the speakers tho (sad face) because there was a constant and heavy flow of people coming to EAT food all day, and after I was done serving food I was tryna taste and talk and chat and politic and it was the most fun.

Long story short… if you need some catering done… call me. ;-)
